Queens Comfort

Comfort food is exactly that, and it seems we have been two for two in finding great comfort food restaurants locally (outside of Manhattan). This time we tried a restaurant in Astoria, Queens called Queens Comfort. From the outside it doesn’t look very appealing however, inside is quite inviting and cozy, which is right in line with the food. The decor as well as the menu is simple but well done. The real gem in this eatery is the staff. Wow, from the moment I called to find out if they take reservations (they don’t) to waiting for a table and being served, they were fabulous! The menu is a combination of old school diner fare and modern gourmet cuisine. For appetizers we enjoyed and shared the Grilled Corn, and the Corn and Potato Chowder. The grilled corn was great with the right balance of sweet and spicy and drenched in Parmesan and butter! The corn and potato chowder was true to its name, thick and hearty with a lot of flavor. The main courses were Guinness braised short rib shepherds pie for the wife, and I was torn between the blue plate special (Italian pot roast), and “The Honey Dripper” (Fried Chicken with honey and spicy mustard on a potato roll). However, the blue plate was sold out (a clue that it was awesome) and I opted for the latter choice. The food was perfectly cooked and the portions as is to be expected were quit large. My wife could not finish her entree and I did not eat one half of the bun to save room. Dessert was a medley of bread puddings. We had Banana Bread Pudding and the Chocolate Chip. The chocolate chip was certainly more of a “traditional” bread pudding but the banana was more of a custard. The only criticism I would have about the whole experience is that my dessert was served cold. This is just my thing I prefer desserts warm. However, my wife’s was nice and toasty. One big positive of the Queens comfort experience, other than the tasty eats and wonderful staff, is that it is one of few BYOB restaurants! It is amazing how much you save when you are not paying top dollar for a drink! Our meal was insanely reasonably, especially for the quality of the food and level of service. We brought two bottles of wine, however in the myths of the swooning we only had time to finish one.Good luck finishing your wine with this food in front of you, try them out when you need some comforting!
